PROJECT REVEAL: ZARIA’S “VINTAGE SOUL” NURSERY IS COMPLETE!

A few months ago, I shared a sneak peek at my progress creating a nursery for the newest addition to our family – Zaria Bayyan.   As we approach Zaria’s 1st birthday (can’t believe it’s been a nearly a whole year already!!), I thought it was only fitting to share the completed project with you here on the blog.

I used this amazing rug from Rugs USA and the Van Gogh “Almond Blossom” wall canvas as the starting points in the design of Zaria’s nursery. The rug’s bold dramatic color and vintage yet modern design were the perfect foundation for the nursery’s new look!

The vibrant color of the rug makes such a huge impact when combined with the already striped walls. 

Although the rug mainly features a bold berry color, I love that it also has accents of navy, tangerine and turquoise. It really brightened up the space!

I used DIY abstract art, a global-inspired cowrie shell accessory and a few potted plants to bring the open shelving area of the nursery to life.

The brightly colored pom-pom trimmed shade atop the vintage gourd lamp and fun zebra figurines on the vintage campaign dresser add a whimsical touch to the design.

I love using unexpected items to store accessories. 

Zaria’s favorite shoes are stored on this adorable gold trimmed tray for an cool pop of color against the white dresser.

Details, Details, Details

There are lots of fun details in the nursery, like this framed vintage travel calendar  print and Zaria’s little gold crown resting on her acrylic tray.

I used lots of texture, pattern and color to modernize the vintage space and keep the design aesthetic playful. 

Mounting these woven baskets on the wall added visual interest and another unexpected global element to the room’s design.

We are big art fans in our home so when given a large wall space to decorate, I like to personalize the space by incorporating gallery walls with art that reflect our family, culture and style.  One of my favorite pieces of this gallery wall installation are the two “I Love My Hair” prints by local artist Andrea Pippins.  Her eclectic styled work perfectly capture the spirit, heritage and beauty of of our family.

There are also a few sentimental touches in the the nursery.  I framed a family heirloom, a pair of my grandmother’s favorite gloves, in a shadow box and incorporated it into Zaria’s gallery wall. Decorating with family heirlooms is a great way to pay homage to loved ones while adding unique personality to your space.

What I love most about Zaria’s nursery is that it is just as “livable” as it is pretty.

When designing her space, I made sure to select furnishings and fabrics that were not only attractive to the eye, but were also functional and felt good too.  The 2 crocheted ottomans provide texture and style while acting as both foot stools and additional seating for Zaria’s siblings (who seem to be in her room quite often now).

Here’s Zaria enjoying playtime in her new space.  Judging from her smile, I’d say she is loving her new digs as much as I am!
